Good morning Grade 6's. We are going on a math scavenger hunt! We will be using QR Codes in our scavenger hunt. QR Codes (Quick Response) are used to show information by scanning an image with a camera on a phone, iPad, or lap top.
Learning Goal:
Today our learning goal is to display data using charts and graphs. We will also read, describe, and interpret data.
You will work in small groups to find QR Codes located throughout the classroom, hallway, and school yard. By scanning the QR Codes, you will receive primary data which you will collect and use later to read, interpret, and draw conclusions.
After the scavenger hunt, you will record your findings on our class Google blog. We will all come together as a learning community and use the class blog to read, interpret, and draw conclusions from both primary and secondary data. We will be creating charts, tables, and graphs to display the information we have found from the scavenger hunt.
Curriculum expectations:
Grade 6: Data Management and Probability
- select an appropriate type of graph to represent a set of data, graph the data using technology, and justify the choice of graph (i.e., from graphs already studied, such as pictographs, horizontal or vertical bar graphs, stem and leaf plots, double bar graphs, broken line graphs, and continuous line graphs)
- read, interpret, and draw conclusions from primary data (e.g., survey results, measurements, observations) and from secondary data (e.g., sports data in the newspaper, data from the Internet about movies), presented in charts, tables, and graphs (including continuous line graphs)
Success Criteria:
To be successful with this activity please make sure you:
- work as a team during the scavenger hunt
- be respectful and considerate of other students and teachers when working outside of the classroom
- collect primary data from the QR Codes
- choose an appropriate graph, table or chart using the primary data and display it on the class blog
- read, interpret, and draw conclusions from the primary and secondary data
Minds On: Let's Get Thinking!
Mind map on board- where have we seen QR Codes and what have they been used for?
Discussion- how can we use QR Codes to help conduct and analyze surveys?
Action: QR Code Scavenger Hunt
break into small groups (3-4)
follow the scavenger hunt with your group
use the information found from the scavenger hunt to create a graph to represent a set of data
Consolidation: So What?
Discuss online what conclusions we can draw from the graphs. Post in response to 2 classmates.
If finished early, create your own QR Code using lap tops or lego
Exit Ticket:
Write 2-3 sentences about something you found interesting in the results of a classmate's graph.
Do you have any further questions or wonderings about the data received from the graphs? Post your response to the blog.
