According to Growing Success (2010), "the primary purpose of assessment is to improve student learning" (28). Assessment in my classroom is based off of this idea, and students are encouraged to reach their full potentials and beyond by being provided with opportunities to excel.
Assessment For Learning:
- teacher providing descriptive feedback, collecting data to guide learning
By providing descriptive feedback, the student is given the chance to improve. The student is able to understand the mistakes that were made, and the student is provided with steps, ideas, and support for improvement. Descriptive feedback also gives the teacher an idea of what the students already know and in which direction the learning might go.
My classroom blog connects to Assessment For Learning because the "Minds On" portion of a 3-part math lesson is a great time for teachers to begin giving descriptive feedback and coaching. I believe it is best for educators to begin providing feedback as soon as the lesson begins because students may have questions or inquiries right from the beginning. It is also important for teachers to start gathering information from the beginning because they are able to see what needs to be done for students to achieve the learning goals.
The learning goal will be stated at the beginning of the lesson, and the goal allows for the students to have a common and shared understanding of what needs to be done during the learning process.
In my experience, I have created success criteria with the students and I believe it is very beneficial. Students are able to take control of their own learning, and they have a better understanding of how to be successful. By allowing students to help create the success criteria, the learning becomes differentiated as all students become involved and the criteria can be manipulated to suit the needs of each individual student.
Assessment As Learning:
- allowing students to become independent learners who have the ability to set goals, monitor their own progress, determine their next steps, and reflect on what they have done
Assessing as the learning is taking place is important because teachers are able to guide, model, and support learning throughout the entire learning process.
My classroom blog connects to Assessment As Learning because the teacher is able to comment on student posts throughout every step of the lesson. The students are able to receive descriptive feedback as the learning is happening, instead of days or weeks later when the work is marked and the assignment is over. In my placement, I often wrote "2 stars and an arrow" on sticky notes and stuck the note to the students work as they were working. This allowed the student to understand what they were doing well and what they can continue to work on. The goal of this learning is for students to become efficient in assessing themselves.
Assessment Of Learning:
- results of how well the student is learning
This type of assessment is beneficial for showing student progress over a period of learning.
My classroom blog connects to Assessment Of Learning because students will display their final products based on the work they have done throughout the assignment. A classroom blog is a great way to show the process of learning because all the student work can be easily located on the blog. Students are able to look back on their own process and make the final product stronger.
In my experience, I have included an exit ticket for students to complete. I like to ask if students have further inquiries because asking that can lead to directions that the teacher might not have thought of.
